Hi, I’m Karen Munkel
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, licensed in Missouri and Illinois. I obtained my Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and have 13 years of experience in community mental health and college counseling. I currently work at UMSL Counseling Services with a diverse group of adults and issues. I am also the Training Coordinator for masters level clinicians there. It is a passion of mine to help future therapists be the most authentic helpers with effective skills to guide their future clients.
I absolutely love being a therapist and collaborating with people to meet their goals. It is my primary aim to build trust with my clients so they feel safe to go where they need to for healing, but also be supported enough to be challenged. I think this is particularly important when working through trauma. I believe relationships and connection lead to healing. Whether that be a connection to a person’s authentic self, their partner(s), family (chosen or otherwise), community, world or their therapist for a time.

“ you are the one thing in the world, above all other things, that you must never give up on.”
-Lili Reinhart
My Approach
My area of expertise is many types of trauma, including childhood abuse and neglect, abusive relationships, sexual abuse, experiences with high control groups and dissociative disorders. Often associated with those experiences are depression, anxiety, panic, low self-esteem, grief, and mood and personality disorders. However, over the course of my career I have had experience with most disorders and issues, with specific ones of note being substance use, systemic discrimination or racism, and managing the significant stressors of being an non-traditional college student.
I use primarily Emotion-Focused, person-centered and humanistic therapeutic approaches. I also have been trained in and using EMDR for about 10 years and did consultation towards certification for 2 years before the pandemic. Having had a previous career in the arts, I encourage creative expression and like to bring humor into the room whenever appropriate. I believe that working in generalist practices (places where clients come in with all issues) my entire career has helped me get valuable experience to see the bigger picture of what is going on for a client. I also use skills from CBT, DBT, ACT and MI if I believe they would be helpful for my clients.
Clients
I work with adult clients. I embrace all races, religions, sexualities, genders, and relationship styles and try to create an environment that celebrates all of the different pieces that make up who we are. I have experience working with folks who identify as LGBTQIA+, gender expansive, neurodiverse and many religions, systems of belief and ethnicities. I have experience with BIPOC, immigrants, and first-generation and international students.
